Des Moines and the State Capitol

As part of our American Culture unit on government, the Intensive English Program took a trip to Des Moines, the state capital of Iowa, to see what that government looked like up close. First we went to Terrace Hill, the house of the governor.

Unfortunately the governor was at work in the Capitol so we could not talk to him but we had a great tour of the grounds and house.

The weather was cool but sunny and we had a few minutes to look around outside before the tour started.

Inside the Capitol was amazing, especially the high interior dome.

Interestingly, we shared the tour with a group of Amish. I found out later that they had gone to Terrace Hill right after us and then to the same restaurant where we ate lunch.

The House of Representatives was in session but not having debates when we visited. The same was true for the Senate.
